Summer of Peace - Alliances & Partnerships
A foundational assumption of the Summer of Peace initiative is that peace results from a healthy, integrated society, in which individuals, organizations, and government are working together in an optimal way. Part of the work of Summer of Peace, then, is to champion and co-create synergistic alliances and partnerships across sectors of society that may not be in full or optimal relationship with each other. We are mapping and implementing the use of many effective models and methodologies -- as well as tapping the expertise of expert facilitators and community builders - to help evolve dialogues with new alliances and partnerships. Our role will serve as a connective tissue, helping to hold the space that is so often unavailable to already greatly overworked and overextended organizations. The outcome will be greater effectiveness and collaboration.
The goal for the Summer will be to unify many different events and activities under a large tent that enhances visibility and impact. Partner organizations with expertise in each area would host events with relative independence to shape them as they see fit. By addressing each sector of society and highlighting its role in creating a culture of peace, the overall series will demonstrate that peace results from the creative collaboration of all sectors.
The timing and sponsorship of each event may change significantly but the following events gives a sense for how the whole may look. Some may be combined into larger conferences with multiple themes on the same weekend. Even when an event focuses on a particular theme, other groups would be invited to have a tabling presence to maximize collaborative exchanges. A proposed spring Peace Forum in the previous year will build ideas, alliances, and programs that will be implemented in advance and during the Summer.

Regional Convenings
Building up to the Summer, we will be holding regional forums and convenings throughout the Bay Area with key leaders and potential partners working in the field. The goal of the convenings will be for representatives from each sector of society to enter into structures that encourage dialogue about how nonprofits, neighborhood groups, businesses, local government and individuals can collaborate more effectively. This process began on June 3, 2008, with an Oakland leadership convening with more than 20 leaders in attendance, co-hosted by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. We plan to continue with an immersive day-long exploration of creating a culture of peace in the fall of 2008.
These gatherings balance the potential for long-term collaboration on the Summer of Peace with more immediate strategic priorities for organizations – a balance between a clear vision and emergent innovation. Our plan is to crystallize one optimal project through these gatherings as a demonstration project in 2009. An example of such a project would be focusing all efforts on a single neighborhood for 30 days and attempting to create a systemic shift by harnessing the best of each group.
Collective Fundraising
The Summer of Peace will be offering to raise funds to support the initiatives of our program partners and cross-sector initiatives. With our partners, we will identify suitable foundation and government grants/earmarks. The goal is to create collective fundraising leverage from our networks that would normally not be available to individual organizations.
